Two for One

One thing you could never go wrong with? Nabe. And I don't mean ANY nabe...it has to be from Ichiriki Loft. What is "nabe" you ask? Nabemono or Nabe for short, is a term referring to all Japanese one pot dishes. Most are stews and soups served during the colder seasons in Japan.

Ichiriki is located on Piikoi Street in Honolulu, across from Ala Moana Shopping Center. My friends and I enjoy their nabe (and zosui, which I will get to in a sec...) on a weekly basis. The atmosphere is very low-key, relaxing and comfortable. You even get to plump your butt down on a cushy pillow! 

Caution: You may fill up on the nabe itself, but PLEASE, save room for zosui (Japanese porridge that has the same texture as Chinese Jook, but the taste reminds me of risotto). You won't regret it!

Cucumber Salad with Ume dressing- refreshing.
Good for you onion lovers- loaded with onions beneath the cucumber.

once you've eaten everything, save the broth and ask for ZOSUI! Zosui is what I call, a Japanese version of porridge or jook.

add rice, stir around til slightly simmering, then add egg

  once egg has been mixed in and simmered for a bit, top with your choice of cheese

or nori

My favorite: cheese zosui!
The rice soaks up the leftover soup that was in the pot,
making this a nice ending to the dinner.
To me, the zosui is a meal in itself!! So filling!

Another favorite that I hardly get to frequent (but would like to more often) is Mariposa. It is located in Neiman Marcus at Ala Moana Shopping Center. They are most widely known for their delicious and airy popovers with a side of Strawberry butter. Mmmm!

Atmosphere is gorgeous. You can either sit inside, or on their lanai, which overlooks Ala Moana Beach Park. It's a must-do!
